Art at St Mark’s
Building Communities is a pair of original paintings by Safina Stewart, an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artist. The paintings sit on either side of the central cross and are a feature of the new St Mark’s building (opened in 2016).
This painting is about communities and families set free, strengthened. The trees are rejoicing. In the background is a mountain and campfire. The underground river indicates the life force of Jesus.
This painting depicts pattern work in the earth’s structure beneath the surface, indicating a time-line from older to newer layers and God’s faithfulness over generations.
Both paintings have gum leaves with a tint of green in the foliage to indicate a traditional welcome from elders on to the land. Both also point to the central cross that lies between them as indicating that the death and resurrection of Jesus has been instrumental in the Jubilee.
